Native to the temperate forests of the eastern United States, its beautiful wood is a reddish colour. Its texture is close grain and uniform, with trace of gum and knots. The only species of cherry that grows into a big tree under favourable conditions, its wood tends to darken with age. It is prized for making furniture and flooring and for architectural woodwork.
